Rationale
My topic is about cultural inequality in NZ. I intended to demonstrate one concept in two visual ways. My concept is based on a report from Vitoria University about more and more Maori are not be able to speak Maori. The first poster presents a Maori female whose mouth is sealed by an English flag. There is an issue of the printing process. There supposed to have a lighter background with Maori symbol further demonstrate the concept. Another poster shows a fern which symbolise English culture. I was mangaged to create a style of woodcut. However, the key objects are not be able to be emphasize on the picture with balk and white. Then, i put color on it and adjusts the text arrangement. I seek to show the contrast between the small weak fern and the large flag under it. Both of the composition are rendered in dark color which seeks to allow the viewers take/considered it seriously.

development of final posters

As far as i am concerned, the image is too simple especially on the upper left hand side of the background. I considered to place some text on the corner first which i had already realised as a bad option. Donald suggested that i could add some Maori text on the background. It inspired me that i don't have to just focus on the upper left hand side but the whole background. As he has always said, he should not advise too much or it will be his designing. I attempt to place some other Maori culture elements on it.

I slightly change different elements on the poster to see how they work on the poster.

development of poster 2
The illustration of teacup i drew was suck. However, i still prefer an illustrational style poster (and i think i would try to develop a real photographic style later as well). This time i hand-draw it first. I intend to import it to photoshop later.

Development of poster 1
One of the tutor advised me to deal with type issue with Indesign rather than simply using photoshop.

The very first original picture.

Placing the text in different place to see how it works.

Changing the scale to see how it works below.

Donald indicated that the yellow type draw viewers' attention too much. The female's mouth should be the key on this poster. I change it to white colour instead.

I change the text at the end even though it still read strange.

Development of the second poster
To be honest, i have known that it is not a good example as an illustration. i have known that i should have shown the fern in the middle is weak or ill as i manage to present that Maori is restricted by English. The fern on The background are ferns meant to contract to the fern in the middle to show that it is not growing well.

One on one meeting
Donald pointed out the issue of clarity. The fern still looks growing well. Besides, my drawing technology is not satisfied now. He advised me to take a photo of a real teacup and shows the English flag on the table.
Besides, to show the weakness of the fern. He advised me to draw the fern smaller or or show it with a more weak appearance. Rather that drawing the earth on it, it could be better to show the table on the image.

Interim presentation 2
The two poster i produced last week.

The clarity of meaning on this poster is vague in many different aspect.
First of all, the viewers are not be able to recognise the fern in the teacup. Because of the bad drawing, they recognise it as a kind of iconic pattern of smoke. It is a vital problem i have to fix at first.
The blur green background does not function as well as what i expected. That is supposed to be a contract to the fern in the front.
Furthermore, it is better to draw the teacup by myself (The white outline is quiet obvious).

There is an obvious pixelated issue on it, which means that i need to change a high resolution picture.

Development of the second poster
The thumbnail and the dummy poster of the second image.

As my topic is about language issue, I was struggling on looking for another element to represent language but i tried to consider the issue in a different angel this time. The image below is more focus on the ”development” or “growth” of Maori language rather than the language itself.
The fern, which symbolise the Maori language, is planted into a small teacup. Besides, the iconic fern is based on a Maori traditional carving design pattern implies “new life and growth”.

Searching ideas for the second poster
I am looking for a new media to demonstrate the language issue. My second poster is supposed to present the same concept in a different visual way.

The first thumb nail on the upper left is a Maori symbol.
The one on the lower left is based on a Maori carving face and The British flag is stamped on its tongue to show that Maori has been sealed by English in some way.

The one on the upper left is similar to the previous thumb nail. It used the Maori tradition carving symbol and a English flag to show that Maori language is been occupied by English.
The one on the upper right is an image with some dialog box. The first dialog box means the speaker is speaking Maori while the teacup symbol means they are speaking English.
The on on the lower left shows a traditional Maori road sign with a modern road sign stick on it in English.
The last picture shows a scene of convenience. The Maori language which is shown as ferns from the left person is going down while English, the tea cup pattern is going up.

The two thumb nails that utilities some traditional carving design. I plan to work on the upper right piece. The image shows a fern grows from a teacup stamped with a English flag.
I had done some research about the traditional Maori carving design. The patterns shown below has their own meaning.

Poster development (first poster)

The poster is supposed to illustrate the cultural issue in NZ. The idea come from the statistic from an essay of Victoria University(http://www.victoria.ac.nz/sacl/about/cpf/publications/pdfs/2015/WP09_2014_Indicators-of-Inequality.pdf) less and less Maori speaks Maori. The English flag covers the face of a Maori suggests that the language occupies Maori people.
The major issue on it is the headline does not catch viewer's eye while the tagline does not explain the situation properly(and is not on the right place as well). The tutor suggests that the tagline is better to place under the headlines.

That is another version with different style of the same image.

The original photo. I have considered that the copyright could be a problem that needs to be figured out later.

That is the very first concept which i should have already abandoned but suggested to pick it back by Phoebe, my tutor.

As tutors always say, better to print it out first to see how it works. First of all, both headline and tagline are difficult to recognise on the poster. Besides, there is an unexpected blank area around the poster but it actually works well on the page.

Concept & style: precedent analysis

We were allowed to discuss the emotion of this image and find out the emotion it is supposed to deliver.
My first impression on this piece is about dangerous, threatened and mysterious according to the yellow background. However, the tutor said that it is better for me to consider the chaotic and ordered text as well to further understand the image.
literally, we speculate that the picture is a post of an exposition. Thus, i consider that the mouth on the right lower side suggested that somebody is speaking on the exposition in some way. He/She could be either the audience or the author. This text on it means information. Thus, i figure that the poster is actually persuading the viewers to come with an stimulating emotion rather than threatened emotion.

Declaration by design: Rhetoric, Argument, and Demonstration in Design Practice
note:
Communication is a central idea of all kinds of design. Everything is considered with design includes some important components of rhetoric. The themes of communication and rhetoric deeply influence how we understand all the objects people use.
The theory of rhetoric should be established for two main reason. It helps to involve new technology into design art. Then it functions to better criticism and evaluation of design of the public.
Design is more than about making things but creating persuasive argument. Character, emotion and technological reasoning are three elements of a design argument.

practice about utilising words on poster
Words & Image
TONE OF VOICE
Passive
aggressive
patronising
humorous
educated/informed
inspiring
joyful/celebratory
belittling
quiet/calm/whisper
sarcastic
authoritative
imperative-urgent
supportive
impartial/ bland/ passive/neutral
Threatening

We are allowed to choice three words from the board and create three more posters base on the words derives from one of the poster made on Monday.
The sketch i draw on the class:

The tutor said the developing posters doesn't change a lot. They are still too similar to the original one (right). First of all, the original doesn't present the statistic about "10% people own 60% of the property in NZ". however, the picture does show that there is a gap between two group of people. That is to say "income gap" has became the key concept on the illustration.
He advises me to show the gap in a different way.

The two sketches the tutor drew for inspiration. The upper one is an example for using the words. The lower one is for example about showing a same idea by illustrating from a different angel/different way.

Those three pieces are the developed three drawings.

From Formalism to Social Significance in Communication Design
note: Communication designers intend to negotiate client's vision and the viewer's response to the designed message. Owing to the variation of audiences in term of ages, ability and income, communication designers have to pay attention on who they are designing for. Because of that, designers involve research method in their design process.
Attitudes: Definition and Structure
note: -"Attitude is a mental and emotional entity that inheres in, or characterises, the person." It is indicated that the concept can not be directly observed but inferred from people's action. Overall, "The definition of attitude: a learned, global evaluation of an object (person, place, or issue) that influences thought and action."
-"People are not born with attitudes."
Attitudes serve functions for people and designer should decide how to translate attitudes into behaviour.
session 2
Grabbing attention: the importance of modal density in advertising
note: The reading is about visual hierarchy.
